Benzoyl peroxide (BPO) may damage the epidermal barrier. Among 33 patients with acne vulgaris and 19 controls, use of a BPO 5% gel for 12 weeks was associated with significant improvement in the Global Acne Grading System score but a significant reduction in beneficial microbial diversity.
