How to prevent back injuries

(HealthDayNews) -- In many cases, back pain is caused by an injury. But sometimes, everyday chores like shoveling snow or lifting heavy objects may cause your back muscles to suddenly go into spasm.

Harvard Medical Schools suggests some things you can do to prevent back injuries:

  • Bend from your knees when lifting heavy objects.
  • Exercise your back and abdominal muscles regularly.
  • Wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes.
  • Don't smoke. Research shows smoking reduces blood flow to the spine.
  • Maintain proper posture.
  • Lose weight, if you need to. Excess weight throws your body out of alignment.
