Guidelines for lifting heavy objects

(HealthDayNews) -- If your back is constantly going out, poor body mechanics when you lift heavy objects may be to blame.

Southwest Washington Medical Center suggests these guidelines for protecting your back:

  • Always use your arms and legs instead of your back.
  • Keep your abdominal muscles tight. This provides a wall of support for your back.
  • Keep the load small.
  • Keep it close to your body.
  • Lift it slowly. Quick, jerky movements are harder on the body.
