Health Tip: Keep Your Back Healthy

Staying active is a great start

(HealthDay News) -- To help reduce your risk of a back injury, start with living a healthier lifestyle.

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons offers these suggestions to help protect your back:

  • Get plenty of regular exercise. Alternate cardiovascular exercises with those designed to strengthen the back and abdominals.
  • Avoid gaining extra weight, which adds stress to the lower back and spine.
  • Don't smoke, which can lead to premature aging of the spine.
  • Practice good posture; stand, sit and lift objects appropriately.
