Don't Let Running Be Your Achilles' Heel

Stretching, proper care reduce risks to tendon

Running or jogging has lots of benefits, and risks, too. One problem can be the Achilles tendon, which connects the calf muscles to the heel bone.

You can get Achilles tendonitis, which manifests with mild pain that increases after running, a sluggish feeling in the leg, pain along the tendon during or a few hours after running, and swelling.

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has some tips to reduce your chances of getting this painful condition:

  • Choose running shoes with a cushioned heel;
  • Take time to warm up and stretch before running;
  • Don't increase your distance and time by more than 10 percent per week;
  • Don't sprint or tackle hills you are unaccustomed to.
