(HealthDayNews) -- If you're scheduled for a mammogram, the University of Virginia suggests the following tips to ensure a topnotch exam:
- Ask to see the FDA certificate that is issued to all facilities that meet high professional safety standards.
- Use a facility that either specializes in mammography or performs many mammograms.
- If you feel comfortable with the place, stick with it for future mammograms. This way the radiologist can compare results from year to year.
- If you have sensitive breasts, avoid having a mammogram the week before your period.
- Don't wear deodorant, powder, or cream under your arms. It may interfere with the quality of the mammogram.
- Bring a list of the places, dates of mammograms, biopsies, or other breast treatments you've had before.
- If you do not hear from your doctor within 10 days, do not assume that your mammogram is normal. Confirm the results by calling your doctor or the facility.
