Colon Cancer Screening

Get tested earlier if there's a family history

(HealthDayNews) -- Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers, yet it's also one of the most preventable. Experts advise that people 50 and older undergo regular screenings for the disease.

But according to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, that may be too late for people at risk of developing an inherited form of colon cancer.

If any of the following applies to you, you should begin screening during your 20s or early 30s:
  • Three or more members of your family have or have had colorectal cancer.
  • Two of them are immediate family.
  • The cancer has spread over at least two generations.
  • A family member was diagnosed before age 50.
