Health Tip: Chew Tobacco Can be More Addictive Than Cigarettes

Signs you may be hooked

(HealthDay News) -- Nicotine is a highly addictive drug, and many people who chew tobacco don't realize that it can be even more addictive than smoking. According to the U.S. National Institutes of Health, many brands of chew contain more nicotine than cigarettes.

The agency offers this quiz to demonstrate how addicted you may be:

  • I no longer get dizzy when I chew.
  • I've switched to a stronger product to gain the same sensation.
  • I swallow juice from tobacco on a regular basis.
  • I sleep with chew in my mouth.
  • I take my first chew first thing in the morning.
  • It's hard to go more than a few hours without chewing.
  • I have strong cravings when I don't chew.

The more items that apply, the more likely you are addicted, the NIH says.
