(HealthDay News) -- Heart palpitations are irregular heartbeats that should be observed by a doctor without delay.

The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute says triggers may include:

  • Feeling strong emotions.
  • Engaging in strenuous activity.
  • Taking certain medications, including decongestants or diet pills.
  • Taking illegal drugs or consuming nicotine, caffeine or alcohol.
  • Having certain medical conditions, including anemia or thyroid disease.
