Spare the Salt

Here are tips for cutting your intake

(HealthDayNews) -- Salt and sodium can raise your blood pressure. Here are some ways you can cut back on your sodium intake, according to the Medical College of Wisconsin:

  • Add less salt to your cooking, gradually cutting it out altogether.
  • Season instead with black pepper, garlic, ginger, onion or lemon juice.
  • Limit your use of prepared sauces, which usually contain added salt.
  • Use vegetables that are fresh, canned or frozen -- minus the salt.
  • Check labels. Buy products that say "sodium free," "low sodium," "reduced sodium," or "unsalted."
