(HealthDayNews) -- Spider veins or varicose veins are certainly unsightly. If you have them, you're not alone. About 60 percent of men and women have them, too.

Fortunately, as ugly and uncomfortable as they can be, the National Women's Health Information Center says they're usually not dangerous.

Exercise and weight control are among the steps you can take to avoid the problem. If you do get spider veins, consult a doctor if they are swollen, red, tender or warm to the touch, or if you have circulation problems in your feet.
