The Lowdown on Low Blood Pressure

It can be a serious health threat

You probably know all about the dangers of high blood pressure, or hypertension. But you may not know that some people suffer from orthostatic hypotension, more commonly called low blood pressure.

The condition, marked by a sudden drop in blood pressure, can be caused by an overuse of drugs like diuretics, prolonged bed rest, or medical conditions like atherosclerosis. Symptoms, which usually occur if you stand suddenly, can include lightheadedness, dizziness, blurred vision and even temporary unconsciousness.

Treatment depends on the underlying cause, health experts say. If you're confined to bed, sitting up frequently can alleviate the condition. If drugs are the underlying cause, changes in dosages may be required. In some cases, measures to improve blood flow -- like wearing support hose -- may be needed.
