Gut Reactions

Digestion speed may vary

(HealthDay is the new name for HealthScoutNews.)

Friday,June 06, 2003 (HealthDayNews) -- Here's a fascinating tidbit about intestinal transit time, the length of time it takes for the stuff you've eaten to move through your large and small intestines.

Not surprisingly, it varies from person to person -- sometimes because of general health factors, and sometimes because of emotions.

Those with the slowest moving intestines are depressed women, usually those repressing anger.

And those with the most average intestinal transit times are men who have a strong streak of hypochondria.

That's from a report in the journal Gut of research done at Australia's University of Sydney.
