Forget-Me-Not

Fortify your memory

(HealthDayNews) -- Forgetting people's names, where you left your car keys, or where you parked you car does not usually mean that you're losing your memory.

For most healthy adults, there's very little change in thinking or memory before age 75, says the Mayo Clinic. Forgetfulness that people (particularly women) complain about at midlife could be due to stress, depression, increased responsibilities, or just a lack of memorizing practice.

Here are some ways you can reduce mental decline:

  • Maintain an active social life.
  • Stay physically active.
  • Challenge your mind. Take classes, learn a new skill, or play chess.
  • Limit your alcohol intake.
  • Stop smoking.
  • Manage your stress.
  • Ger regular health exams. Some medical conditions such as coronary artery disease and diabetes can lead to dementia.
