(HealthDay News) -- Oily hair can be an embarrassing problem, but the University of Maryland Medical Center says there are ways to prevent it:

  • Shampoo daily. Leaving the shampoo on your head for about 5 minutes before rinsing can help.
  • Avoid brushing the hair too often or too vigorously because this often causes the oil to travel from the scalp to the ends of the hair.
  • Hormones can affect the amount of oil in hair, so be aware of things that can affect hormone levels, such as the birth control pill and stress.
