THURSDAY, Feb. 27, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- The number of cosmetic surgery procedures increased 3 percent, and reconstructive surgery procedures increased 2 percent in 2013, according to an annual report published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
According to the report, cosmetic minimally-invasive procedures increased 3 percent in 2013 -- to more than 13.4 million procedures. The top five cosmetic minimally invasive procedures were botulinum toxin type A, soft tissue fillers, chemical peel, laser hair removal, and microdermabrasion. There was a 1 percent increase in cosmetic surgical procedures in 2013 -- to nearly 1.7 million procedures. The top five surgical procedures included breast augmentation, nose reshaping, eyelid surgery, liposuction, and facelift. In 2013, more women opted for silicone breast implants, which were used in 72 percent of all breast augmentations performed in 2013. Buttock augmentations with fat grafting and neck lifts also increased in popularity.
In addition, in 2013 there was a 2 percent increase in reconstructive plastic surgery, with the top six procedures being tumor removal (up 5 percent), laceration repair (down 13 percent), maxillofacial surgery (down 5 percent), scar revision (up 4 percent), hand surgery (up 6 percent), and breast reconstruction (up 4 percent).
"The demand for plastic surgery remains strong, with our statistics showing increases in both cosmetic surgical and minimally-invasive procedures," Robert X. Murphy, M.D., the president of the ASPS, said in a statement.
