Dental Dangers

Your teeth have more enemies than sugar

(HealthDayNews) -- You know that sugar is bad for your teeth. But did you know starchy foods can also be a problem?

The Journal of Dentistry in Children says the starch and sugar mix with saliva to form an acid that can damage teeth. But not all starchy foods are equal. Here are a few, from worst to safest:

  • boiled potato
  • English muffin
  • raw potato
  • yellow cake
  • plain wheat flour
  • enriched wheat flour
  • bagels
  • packaged white bread
  • Italian bread
  • And, the safest for the teeth of all: pumpernickel bread.
