Teeth Grinding

Clues you may be clenching your teeth while you snooze

(HealthDayNews) -- Teeth grinding, called bruxism, is thought to be related to stress and anxiety or to an abnormal alignment of the teeth or jaw. Because it usually occurs while you're asleep, you may be unaware that you're a teeth grinder.

According to Brigham and Women's Hospital, the following symptoms may be signal bruxism:

  • Teeth sensitive to heat, cold, or brushing.
  • Tense facial or jaw muscles.
  • Hairline cracking of the enamel on some teeth.
  • Sore teeth.
  • Inflammation of the gums.
  • Headache.
  • Damage to the inside of the cheek.

If you suspect you are grinding your teeth, speak to your dentist. Treatment methods include behavior modification, orthodontic devices, muscle relaxants, and mild sleeping aids.
