TUESDAY, Nov. 22 (HealthDay News) -- Patients with psoriasis attach greater importance to process attributes (treatment location, frequency, duration, delivery method, and individual cost) than to outcome attributes (probability, magnitude and duration of benefit, and probability, severity, and reversibility of adverse effects) when choosing a treatment option for psoriasis, according to a study published in the November issue of the Archives of Dermatology.
Marthe-Lisa Schaarschmidt, from Heidelberg University in Mannheim, Germany, and colleagues analyzed data from 163 patients with moderate or severe psoriasis to assess their individual preferences for treatment. The outcome and process attributes of individual preferences for psoriasis treatment were analyzed, and the relative importance scores (RISs) for each attribute were calculated. The associations of treatment preference with sociodemographic (age, gender, marital status) and socioeconomic characteristics (income, employment), and Psoriasis Area and Severity Index and Dermatology Life Quality Index scores were analyzed.
The investigators found that the most important attribute influencing patients' preference was treatment location (RIS, 26.76), followed by probability of benefit (RIS, 23.77), and the method of delivery (RIS, 23.49). Compared to the RIS for adverse effect-related attributes, the RISs for all process attributes were higher. The concern about probability of benefit was less among older (≥65 years old) versus younger participants.
"Incorporating preferences in shared decision making may facilitate treatment adherence and optimize outcome," the authors write.
