Keeping Your Cool

Even walkers should take precautions in the heat

You know you have to exercise even if it's hot and humid. Walking is still OK, right?

Yes, but you need to take precautions to protect yourself from illness caused by the heat. Health experts recommend walking during the coolest part of the day, walking in the shade as much as possible, drinking a large glass of water 15 minutes before you go out and every 20 to 30 minutes while exercising. Finally, wear a hat with a brim or a desert-type hat with flaps.

Seek medical attention if you feel the signs of heat sickness, including dizziness, disorientation and nausea.
