Health Tip: Keep Your Kidneys Healthy

Organs give warning signs of trouble

(HealthDayNews) -- You can't do without your kidneys, so you need to keep them healthy.

The organs, each about the size of your fist, filter an amazing 200 quarts of fluid a day. Only 2 quarts of that leave your body as urine. The rest stays in your body, says the National Kidney Foundation. The kidneys also help control blood pressure and make vitamins.

With all those tasks falling on kidneys, you should know the early warning signs of kidney disease. The foundation says they include: burning or difficulty during urination; a frequent need to urinate, especially at night; blood in the urine; swelling of the hands and feet; pain in the back or side below the ribs; and high blood pressure.

If you have any of these symptoms, see your doctor right away.
