Everyone knows lightning is dangerous. But as summer gets into full swing, it's worth reviewing the tips for staying safe in a thunderstorm.
First, don't wait to get inside if you hear thunder, advises the American Red Cross of Central Arizona. Hearing that clap means the storm is close and you could be hit by a bolt. Once safely inside, avoid using the telephone, unplug major appliances and don't take a bath or shower. Even your air conditioner should be shut down to avoid a power surge that can damage the compressor.
If you're outside, avoid boats and don't swim. Take cover in a low-lying open space, if possible, and avoid trees and tall metal poles.
