Health Tip: Preventing 'Pink Eye'

How to conquer conjunctivitis

(HealthDay News) -- You keep rubbing your eyes, but they won't stop itching. When you look in the mirror, they are red and puffy and you haven't been crying. What you may have is a problem called conjunctivitis, more commonly called "pink eye."

The three types of conjunctivitis -- viral, allergic, and bacterial -- require different remedies. With the exception of the allergic type, conjunctivitis is contagious. Your regular doctor or ophthalmologist can diagnose your condition and recommend treatment.

To avoid spreading the infection, St. Luke's Cataract and Laser Institute in Tarpon Springs, Fla., offers these suggestions:

  • Disinfect surfaces like doorknobs and counters with diluted bleach solution.
  • Avoid touching your face.
  • Wash your hands frequently.
  • Don't share towels or washcloths.
  • Do not reuse handkerchiefs (using a disposable tissue is best).
  • Avoid shaking hands.
