Thief of Sight

Glaucoma sneaks in to steal your vision

You haven't noticed any decline in your vision so you figure your eyes are fine.

Maybe not. The Glaucoma Foundation says glaucoma often strikes without warning signs, and its effects are permanent.

Glaucoma is a specific pattern of "optic nerve damage and visual field loss caused by a number of different eye diseases that can affect the eye," the foundation says.

Everyone's at risk, but especially those over 45 who do not undergo regular eye exams. A family history of the disease is another risk factor. If glaucoma is detected early, measures can be taken to minimize the damage. So don't skip that visit to the ophthalmologist.
