Avoid taking shortcuts through unpopulated areas

(HealthDayNews) -- If you enjoy strolling the streets on vacation or in your own neighborhood, the American Automobile Association offers these safety tips:

  • Carry a cell phone.
  • Avoid carrying extra money and credit cards.
  • Don't wear flashy jewelry or pricey clothing that will attract attention.
  • Walk confidently with your head and shoulders up. Assertive body language keeps unwanted attention at bay.
  • Don't take shortcuts through deserted areas.
  • If you're being followed, abruptly change direction. If you continue to be followed, go quickly to a public place and call the police, or use your cell phone and dial 911.
