DDW: Potential Diverticulosis Risk Factors Evaluated
No association found between dietary fiber, fat, red meat, or physical activity and diverticulosis
TUESDAY, May 10 (HealthDay News) -- Dietary fiber intake, physical activity, and red meat and fat intake do not appear to be associated with diverticulosis, according to research presented at Digestive Disease Week 2011, held from May 7 to 10 in Chicago.
Anne F. Peery, M.D., of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and colleagues evaluated data from three colonoscopy-based studies conducted between 1998 and 2010 at the University of North Carolina Hospitals to determine whether dietary fiber, fat, red meat, or sedentary behavior were associated with diverticulosis confirmed by colonoscopy. The investigators evaluated data from 2,378 participants aged 30 to 80, including 968 diverticulosis cases and 1,410 diverticula-free controls.
After adjustment for age, race, and body mass index, the investigators found no association between total fiber and diverticulosis (odds ratio [OR], 0.96). The investigators also found no association between diverticulosis and fat intake (OR, 1.24), red meat intake (OR, 1.21), or physical activity (OR, 1.07).
"We found no association between dietary fiber, fat, red meat, or physical activity and diverticulosis," the authors write. "Previous hypothesizes regarding diverticulosis risk factors and diet recommendations to patients should be reconsidered."
