Treatment for diarrhea and vomiting

(HealthDayNews) -- If you're overcome by a bout of diarrhea or vomiting, Ithaca College in New York suggests the following treatments:

  • Suck on ice chips or sip drops of water until the vomiting stops.
  • Have only clear liquids for 24 to 48 hours. Start with small amounts of water, then gradually add other fluids, such as weak tea without sugar, flat Pepsi, Coke, 7-Up or Ginger Ale, Kool-Aid, Jello, or diluted Gatorade.
  • Once the diarrhea or vomiting improves significantly, slowly introduce the BRAT diet: bananas, rice, apples and toast.
