Living With a Belly Ache

Steps to ease stomach discomfort

Having a peptic stomach disorder isn't fun. It can be painful, and you often have to avoid favorite foods. Still, Blue Cross/Blue Shield says a few steps often can help manage the problem.

First, it's important to understand your symptoms and how long you've had them. Then be ready to describe them to your physician, and don't be shy. Ask your doctor and pharmacist lots of questions.

The organization says you should make eating changes, too. First, eat a low-fat diet and switch to more frequent, smaller meals. You also should avoid alcohol, tobacco and aspirin-related medications and try to reduce stress.

Finally, if you're taking prescription medication, and it doesn't work, tell your physician to try something else.
