Health Tip: Prevent Mosquito Bites

And avoid disease

(HealthDay News) -- Biting mosquitoes can transmit diseases like the West Nile virus, so protecting yourself from them is especially important.

Mosquitoes are most active in the hours between evening and early morning, when you should avoid the outdoors, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises. If you need to be out at that time, be sure to wear an insect repellent that contains DEET. Long pants and long-sleeved shirts offer additional protection.

Removing standing water from around your home can help rid the area of mosquitoes' breeding ground, the CDC says. Also, make sure window screens and screen doors are free of holes that could allow the insects through.
