Health Tip: Treating a Burn

Keep the area clean and protected

(HealthDay News) -- Minor, first-degree burns are usually red and painful, and often swollen.

The burned skin may peel off after a few days, and should heal within six days. Unless the burn covers a large portion of the body, treatment probably can be given at home.

The American Academy of Family Physicians recommends that you never put butter, oil, ice or ice water on a burn. Instead, soak it in cool water. Then apply aloe vera or an antibiotic ointment. Cover the area with a clean, dry gauze dressing. An over-the-counter pain reliever, such as Tylenol, Advil or Motrin can be used to reduce pain and discomfort.

If the burn does not heal after a few days, or appears to worsen or become infected, see your doctor.
