The Burn Quiz

If you sear your hand, do you apply heat or cold to soothe it?

Ouch! You didn't realize that pot handle was so hot. Now your hand is red and sore. You reach for the butter or the ice to soothe it. After all, that's what the experts recommend. Right?

Wrong. According to the American College of Emergency Physicians, if you suffer a mild burn you should immediately immerse it in cool, not cold, water. After that, the wound should be cleaned. Then, antibiotic ointment and a bandage can be applied.

If the burn does not heal or is particularly bad -- often marked by blistering or even charring of the skin -- contact a physician.
