All Hospitals Aren't the Same

How to choose one carefully

You probably assume all hospitals are pretty much the same. After all, doctors and nurses all have training and degrees and know what they're doing.

But the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality says it isn't that simple. If you need to be hospitalized, the agency recommends that, when possible, you find one that has experience treating your condition or performing the type of surgery you need. And, when going home, make sure you get clear instructions on how your treatment will continue.

One more thing. The agency says don't hesitate to ask nurses and other hospital workers if they have washed their hands. Studies have shown that when hospital workers are asked about hygiene, they're more likely to wash up and use more soap.
