Do As I Say, Not As I Do

When did your doctor last get a check-up?

You know all the things you're supposed to do in order to stay healthy, including getting regular check-ups. Your doctor no doubt has told you about the importance of preventive medicine.

But does she follow her own advice? According to the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, there's a good chance that your own physician may not be doing what you've been told to do.

In a survey published in the February 2000 issue of the Journal of General Internal Medicine, 37 percent of medical residents at four major teaching hospitals said they had no primary-care doctor. Another 12 percent said they acted as their own physician, which might as well be the same thing.

The same 12 percent said they were too busy with work to get a check-up.
