20,000 Britons Addicted to OTC Products
Codeine preparations most abused
(HealthDay) -- At least 20,000 people in the United Kingdom are addicted to over-the-counter medications, reports The Independent of London.
The story says products containing codeine are among the most frequently abused in Britain, where controls are less stringent than, for instance, in the United States. Although most products containing codeine are available only by prescription in the United States, some states allow over-the-counter (OTC) sales of products with small doses of the drug. People addicted to codeine often will buy large quantities of products containing the drug to satisfy their cravings. And products with codeine and other addictive drugs are easy to get on the Internet without prescriptions.
