For Emergencies Only

Some tips on when to use '911'

Whoever came up with the 911 emergency number should be commended. It's easy to remember and quick to dial. But you need to know when to use it. It's not for every situation.

Marion County, Ore., officials say use 911 only in a life-threatening emergency. Otherwise the line will be tied up for those who really need it.

Still not sure when to dial the number? County officials offer a few examples:

  • If your house is on fire;
  • If someone is trying to break into your home;
  • If someone is badly injured or extremely ill.
