Flying After Scuba Diving

Wait at least 12 hours before you fly

(HealthDayNews) -- If your vacation includes some scuba diving, make sure you take your last dive 12 to 24 hours before you're scheduled to fly, advises the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Scuba diving exposes your lungs to a high-pressure environment, whereas airplane travel is a low-pressure atmosphere. This dramatic change in pressure carries the risk for arterial gas embolism, which is a dangerous condition caused by air bubbles that escape from your lungs and get into your arteries.

To prevent this from happening, you need to spend some time re-acclimating to sea level pressures before you board a plane.
