Genital Injuries

A home care guide for mild wounds

(HealthDayNews) -- If your child injures his or her genitals, don't panic. Even minor injuries to this area can cause lots of bleeding because of the rich blood supply, according to the San Diego Children's Hospital.

But if the wound seems severe -- major bleeding that can't be stopped or your child is too weak to stand -- call 911 immediately.

Here's how to treat minor injuries:

  • If there's bleeding, use gauze to apply direct pressure for 10 minutes.
  • If there's a minor cut, wash the area with soap and water for five minutes.
  • If there's swelling, apply ice or a cold compress for 20 minutes.
  • Give your child acetaminophen for pain relief.
  • Cuts in the genital area usually heal in about four days.
