The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons mentions these potential symptoms:

  • A severe, sudden pain in the back of the thigh while exercising. It may be so sharp that you either fall or can't put weight on the injured leg.
  • Swelling of the hamstring within a few hours.
  • Bruising or change in skin color on the back of the thigh below the knee.
  • Feeling weak in the hamstring for several weeks.
