What to Do During a Flood

Some safety tips

(HealthDayNews) -- Spring thaws and April showers can mean flooding in some areas.

In the event of a flood, follow these safety tips from the city of Kingston, Ontario:

  • Listen to the radio for updated emergency information.
  • Early on, fill your bathtubs, sinks, and plastic bottles with clean water, since flooding can contaminate water sources.
  • Bring in outdoor furniture and secure any items that could be swept away by floodwaters.
  • Move valuable items to higher floors in your home.
  • If you are advised to leave your home, do so immediately.
  • Stay away from valleys, low-lying areas, and canyons as they can fill with water very quickly.
  • If you come across a flowing stream where the water is above your ankles, stop, turn around and go another way. You can be swept off your feet in as little as six inches of water.
