Erection pill and testosterone gel effective combination, study finds

FRIDAY, Aug. 13, 2004 (HealthDayNews) -- The use of a testosterone gel in combination with an erection pill may help men with sexual dysfunction who don't respond to an erection pill alone, new research says.

The study, published in the August issue of the Journal of Urology, found the combination approach improved erectile function and overall sexual satisfaction for men with erectile dysfunction and low testosterone who didn't respond to sildenafil (Viagra) alone.

"Our data support the potential benefits of a combination therapy with testosterone gel for men with erectile dysfunction and low testosterone who find sildenafil by itself ineffective," lead investigator Dr. Ridwan Shabsigh, an associate professor of urology at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, said in a prepared statement.

"When assessing erectile dysfunction, doctors and patients should consider using a simple blood test to determine if low testosterone is a contributing factor. If the root cause is low testosterone, sidlenafil alone won't fix the problem," Shabsigh said.
