Health Tip: Belching

Suggestions to tame it

(HealthDayNews) -- Belching contests aside, most of us prefer not to be plagued with a case of the burps.

The American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) says that belching is caused by swallowed air from: eating and drinking too fast; not chewing food completely; poorly fitting dentures; chewing gum or sucking on hard candies; carbonated beverages; excessive swallowing caused by postnasal drip or nervous tension; and forced belching to relieve abdominal discomfort.

In order to prevent excessive belching -- and to ensure you're welcome in polite society -- you should avoid carbonated beverages, chewing gum, or sucking on hard candies, the ACG advises.
