Health Tip: Do Your Part to Reduce Waste

You can start by composting

(HealthDay News) -- Reducing waste can help lead to a healthier Earth. And there's no better place to start than in your own yard.

Among U.S. Environmental Protection Agency suggestions:

  • Use organic waste materials, such as food scraps and yard trimmings, to create a compost.
  • Save fireplace ashes and add them to your compost, once they've cooled.
  • During summer, raise the blade on your lawn mower to keep the grass a bit higher. This can reduce the need to water the lawn, and cut down on brown grass and weed growth.
  • Don't bag up grass clippings after you mow. Leave clippings on the lawn to provide more nutrients for the soil.
  • Donate old plants that you'd otherwise throw away to local schools, parks or gardens.
