Health Tip: Be an Organ Donor

Make sure your family knows you want to help

(HealthDay News) -- More than 91,000 Americans are currently waiting for an organ donation that could save their lives, the Virginia-based Coalition on Donation says.

Every 12 minutes another name is added to the national transplant waiting list, and another person dies every 18 minutes because he or she did not receive a transplant in time, the coalition adds.

If you wish to become an organ donor upon your death, make your wishes known to your family members, the coalition advises. Many states make it easier by allowing you to sign the back of your driver's license.

It's also possible to donate an organ, such as one of your two kidneys, while you're still alive. This is called a living donation.

If you are interested in becoming a living organ donor, you should talk with your doctor about the emotional and physical ramifications, the coalition advises.
