Health Tip: Keep Pet Food Safe

Wash hands before and after contact

(HealthDay News) -- Fido or Fluffy deserve the same confidence as you do -- that their food will be safe to eat.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration suggests these tips for safe handling of pet food:

  • Before and after touching pet food, wash hands thoroughly for 20 seconds with soap and warm water.
  • After each feeding, clean all pet food and water dishes and any feed scoops with soap and hot water.
  • Scoop food out of containers with a clean, dedicated scoop.
  • Discard any spoiled or old pet food by placing inside a tied plastic bag.
