Use Caution with Online Pharmacies

Make sure you get prescriptions from reputable sites

As Internet orders of medical products, including prescription drugs, increases, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) urges caution.

Here's how to be a careful buyer:

  • Never purchase drugs online unless there's a U.S. address and phone number on the Web site in case of problems;
  • Don't buy drugs from a foreign Web site, and
  • Don't use sites that will sell you drugs without requiring a physical exam and a doctor's prescription.

The FDA also says be wary of sites that offer new drugs touted as "miracle cures."

Finally, the agency urges you to make sure the site is licensed and in good standing by checking with the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, at www.nabp.net, or by calling (847) 698-6227.
