Puerto Rico's Zika Epidemic Over: Officials
The Zika epidemic in Puerto Rico is over, according to officials.
The health ministry said Monday that only 10 cases of the mosquito-borne virus have been reported in each four-week period since April, compared with more than 8,000 cases reported in a four-week period at the height of the outbreak last August, the Washington Post reported.
Puerto Rico was the part of the United States most affected by Zika. There were more than 40,000 confirmed cases of infection as of May 20, including 3,678 pregnant women, and there have been 35 reported cases of Zika-related birth defects.
In the health ministry's statement, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention acting director Anne Schuchat said officials "cannot let our guard down," the Post reported.
