New Ebola Cases Confirmed in Liberia: WHO
Less than three months after Liberia was declared Ebola-free for the second time, three new cases of the deadly disease were confirmed Friday, the World Health Organization says.
Liberia was first declared Ebola-free on May 9, but new cases occurred in June. The country was declared Ebola-free again on Sept. 3, BBC News reported.
In a speech Thursday night before the new cases emerged, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf gave a speech praising "the resilience" of Liberians in defeating the outbreak.
Experts believe the new cases in Liberia pose a serious setback for the country, BBC news reported.
Liberia has had more than 10,000 Ebola cases and 4,000 deaths since December 2013. More than 11,000 people have died in the outbreak, most of them in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.
