A Precursor to Stem Cells?

Researcher finds new cell type in stomach that could make four main kinds of tissue

FRIDAY, Feb. 21, 2003 (HealthDayNews) -- A type of cell found in the stomach and small intestine has the potential for making the four major types of human tissue, new research claims.

This type of VENT (ventrally emigrating neural tube) cell is the latest to be identified by developmental biologist Dr. Paul Sohal, a Medical College of Georgia researcher.

The finding of these cells advances Sohal's efforts to define and describe the cells he first found migrating out from the neural tube of a chick embryo.

These may be the first source of new cells identified in the embryo since 1868, and the precursor to adult stem cells.

The findings appeared in a recent issue of the International Journal of Developmental Neuroscience.
