Multiparametric MRI Found to Accurately Detect Prostate Cancer

FRIDAY, May 2, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging is highly accurate for the detection of prostate cancer in patients with clinically low-risk cancer, particularly for cancers with larger volume and higher Gleason grade, according to a study published in the May issue of Radiology.

Jin Young Kim, M.D., from Keimyung University in Daegu, South Korea, and colleagues examined 100 patients with clinically determined low-risk prostate cancer utilizing multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (T2 weighted, diffusion weighted, and dynamic contrast material enhanced) before prostatectomy. The images were compared to histopathologic examination.

The researchers found that multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging showed high diagnostic performance for the detection of cancer ≥0.5 cm³ with respect to cancer volume and Gleason grade. This diagnostic accuracy was significantly higher for cancers with a volume >1 cm³, compared those with a volume of 0.5 to 1 cm³ (87.7 versus 82.6 percent; P = 0.02) and for cancers with Gleason grades of ≥7 versus grades ≤6 (89.2 versus 80.6 percent; P = 0.01).

"Detection of prostate cancer in patients with clinically low-risk cancer with multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging is highly accurate, and larger cancer volume and higher Gleason grade are associated with higher detection accuracy," the authors write.
