WEDNESDAY, Oct. 22, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- Resources are available to increase protection against Ebola transmission, according to a report from the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC).
Following the recent death of a patient in Dallas who had contracted Ebola virus and the transmission of the virus to nurses, APIC has developed appropriate protocols and is promoting education for health care staff on process and procedures to protect against Ebola virus transmission. APIC members have also undertaken initiatives to help prevent the spread of Ebola to the United States.
To respond to needs in the United States, APIC is partnering with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on enhanced standards and training tools for use of personal protective equipment. In addition, they are recruiting infection preventionists for teams that will provide immediate assistance to hospitals and help assess readiness of and to provide assistance for Ebola treatment centers. Ebola resources will be available in a repository on the APIC website. In addition, APIC is offering a webinar on Ebola infection prevention guidance for infection preventionists.
Additional resources are available on the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Ebola website, which includes checklists for patients being evaluated for Ebola and an algorithm for evaluation of returned travelers. The American College of Physicians, American Hospital Association, and Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education also have information and resources relating to Ebola and its management in the United States.
